There is POWER in the spit!” That was my immediate reaction after reading my devotional this morning. We all know that Jesus is all power, so it is right to conclude that his power exudes from every inch of his body. The story of the blind man found in John 9 is a perfect example of such power. I mean, really, Power in SPIT! Not only that, Jesus gives the man a double dose of his power-Himself.
The story begins with Jesus and the disciples approaching a man who was blind since birth. Such as humans, the disciples assume the man, or his parents must have sinned greatly to cause his disability. In this case the disciples were wrong on both accounts reminding us that God always has a purpose. Jesus corrects them saying that neither the man or his parents did anything wrong. He went on to say that the disability was on display to show the miracle manifestations of God’s healing power. (John 9:1-5).
So, not to be disobedient, Jesus walks to the blind man, SPITS in the dirt, and makes mud. Next, he applied the mud to the eyes of the blind man, then told him to go wash it off in the pool of Siloam. The man did as instructed and the miracle was manifested. He was able to see clearly. There was power in the spit (John 9:6-7). The man, and all the people marveled and the man went on his way.
Jesus was not finished with him yet. As you read further (John 9: 8-34) we find the rest of the story. The man who was blind from birth was now able to see! As he made his way through the city everyone was in “shock and awe,” at this miracle. When the Pharisees-a group who were accusing Jesus-heard of it, they asked each other what happened. They asked the people on the corner, they asked the man’s parents (who basically told them to ask the man himself).
Other groups questioned the miracle. They found the man and questioned him, and he told them of the spit. There was power in the spit, the mud, and the anointing of his eyes. This group encouraged the man to denounce Jesus as a sinner and that God had only the power to heal. The man desperately explained to them that he did not know whether Jesus was as sinner or not, but He healed him with the spit! He further explained that if Jesus healed his eyes, that must mean if Jesus were a mere man He could not possible display such a power of healing.
This enraged the Jews. They felt chastised by a lowly, ex-blind man and they cast him out of the city. Now, as I wrote earlier, Jesus was not finished with the man he had just healed. He watched and heard all that was occurring until he encountered the man again. This time, Jesus would give the man a good look at the Person who healed him with the power of His spit.
In John sd Jesus’ next encounter with the man is revealed. Jesus heard they had cast him out of the city and went to find him. When found, Jesus asked the man if he believed in the Son of God? The man, asked Jesus to introduce him to the Son of God, so he might believe in Him. Here, Jesus reveals himself to the man. He tells the man that the person he is talking to and seeing right then was the Son of God. The man, who could not doubt because of the miracle of sight, could not deny this. He confessed his belief, and worshipped Jesus.
A double dose of the power of Jesus. The power in the spit, and then, actually seeing, talking to, and experiencing the Son of Man by His presence. Jesus Christ is power. Everything in and about Him is powerful. Open up and let His power fill you today to address your needs. If there is power in the spit, there is power in Him to answer your prayers. Amen
